Step away from the parentheses

OK, so here is this quote in a story about how the feds are giving $26 million to the South Carolina court system:

"This gives us the ability to complete the system statewide," Toal said. (Toal is state Chief Justice Jean Toal.)
Healine on story: $26 million grant to link courts online.

So far, so good. Now, here is the quote as done in the pullout box:

"This (the grant) gives us the ability to complete the (pilot online court court-information) system statewide."
-- Chief Justice Jean Toal

Now let's try it with the hed and the original quote:

$26 million grant to link courts online
"This gives us the ability to complete the system statewide." -- Chief Justice Jean Toal

Does anyone not understand those two working together?
Moral: Step away from the parentheses. They are a crutch in normal text. They are downright ugly in a pullout.
