Thoughts on links

One of the hopes of the Internet was that it would become a rich, relevant interlinked hypertext -- key word being relevant.

Over at Language Log, Mark Lieberman has some examples of why that idea is being corrupted and what makes links relevant and not.

It's worth thinking about since, again, linkage is likely to be (or should be) the province of editors, specifically copy editors, I think.
