Happy Memorial Day
Classes began today for our summer session. You see, here in the cradle of the Confederacy we don't celebrate those "Northern" holidays. For those of you who had a wonderful three-day weekend, we will sneer when you are working when we celebrate Confederate Memorial Day. Of course, that's the middle of the week, not a three-day weekend, and nothing else closes, and it is optional, and ... oh, what the heck.

Reminds me of when I ran the AP office in Rhode Island, which still celebrates V-J Day in the middle of August (basically, an excuse to go to the beach for a day when the water finally has warmed). Try explaining to the New York general desk why you couldn't get hold of anyone on an otherwise normal day in the rest of the world in the middle of the week.
