Walker on editing
In her wonderful way of saying things, Ruth Walker has this observation in her latest Christian Science Monitor "Verbal Energy" column:
Editing is often the point at which the irresistible push for shorter, simpler ways of saying things meets the immovable object of the need for standards, accuracy, and precision.
And while you are considering that, pop on over to her latest entry as well for some schooling on the correct use of "Holland" and "Ulster" -- too often, as she notes, misused in our constant push for shorthand.
