Kwan heds on thin ice

As Tom Mangan has often written, when writing heds about major events, reject the first thought that comes into your mind, because everyone else will have thought it, too -- the definition of trite.

So, of course, Michelle Kwan's withdrawal from the Winter Olympics brought the usual crop of heds that strove for the gold, but came up lead. A partial list, courtesy of Google and my own searching:

A Kwan song - The Columbia (S.C.) State
Kwan dive -- Slate. Perhaps my least favorite
Kwan song ends on sad note -- Rocky Mountain News
Injury leads to Kwan song -- Houston Chronicle
Kwan's song: A legacy without gold -- Allentown (Pa.) Morning Call

But I have a soft spot for Canada's Calgary Sun, which put it succinctly but still with punch: Kwan quits

That's all that needed to be said.

I've seen several variations of "No Kwan Do." Yikes.

Helen:

I hadn't seen those, but thanks for pointing them out. That's even worse than Kwan Song.

i know this doesn't really have relevance, but i was reading some article about kwan (maybe it was the state one) and they kept referring to her as america's sweetheart in the figure skating world. i just saw it as really editorialized, because i can't be the only one who doesn't like her (and never has liked her). anyway, after 3 references to how americans loved her i stopped reading.
