Can Starbucks' workers get those benefits, too

From my local paper's business pages today came this muddled passage about Starbucks' plan to open a coffee-roasting plant in South Carolina:

About 160 people will be hired by 2009 for the 150,000-square-foot plant, eligible for health care benefits and an average salary of of about $17 an hour.

Boy, those plants sure work cheaply, don't they. Try putting it into two sentences:

About 160 people will be hired by 2009 for the 150,000-square-foot plant. They will be eligible for health care benefits and an average salary of of abuot $17 an hour.

From the same story: Gov. Mark Sanford thanked Starbucks for their investment and praised the company's creativity and innovation.

Now if we could just praise the writer's attention to subject-pronoun agreement. Alas, we can't. Repeat after me: Companies are an "it," not a "they." Guess the copy desk was out for coffee.
