Sports changes at the Merc

Mixed emotions today on the announcement from the San Jose Mercury News that Rachel Wilner has been promoted to sports editor.

Hooray for her -- a former copy editor and designer at the L.A. Times before moving to the Merc 10 years ago -- for ascending to the rare ranks of women sports editors.

But sadness that Craig Lancaster, who had been the sports editor, suddenly resigned. I had gotten to know Craig as a friend through the American Copy Editors Society. Don't have any details, so here's hoping for the best.
