Monday morning headline follies

Always good to start out the day with one of these.


Another reminder that when using modifiers that normally associate with people, your readers will want to attach them to any human-like reference, not necessarily the non-human one you intended. Especially online, this is a case where the "official to help single-gender schools," though longer, would be a lot clearer.

I saw that off SCHotline and thought, "You mean you can be both?"

Reminds of Vin Scully, reading that a ballplayer was "day-to-day," remarking, "But aren't we all?"

I was somewhat taken aback also, but never analyzed my reaction. How about "single-gender-school official"? On second thought, that would suggest the whole school would be single gender. Your suggestion at least works.
