Can journalism afford to be free?: A must read
If you are a journalist and you care about your future, then you must read this week's Business Week cover story, "The Vanishing Mass Market."
Pay special attention to Anthony Bianco's accompanying commentary, "Quality News: Who Will Pay The Tab?" It puts the two core questions well:
Can the mass media make money from digital publications that tap advertisers' desire for targeted ads? And, if the ad revenue from digitalization proves inadequate, will Americans be willing to pay directly for good journalism?

As I noted in an earlier post on this Web log, this is a critical debate that must be joined by journalists, or we risk becoming marginalized.
