Curt Hazlett has a good piece on API about how copy editors need to act as the readers' advocate. But just as Kenn Finkel notes in a comment attached to Hazlett's, too many CE's I talk with, however, say they have less and less opportunity to address such issues and are seen primarily as copy processors. Didn't we deal with this a few years ago with the study on widespread copy editor demoralization? Wasn't that why ACES was formed? Instead, we seem to be headed toward more territorialism in some newsrooms. And the press for speed in the multimedia word just aggravates that.
