The mouse story was a louse?

Remember that story earlier in the week about how a man threw a mouse on a fire and the flaming mouse supposedly ran out of the fire back to the man's house and set it ablaze?

Surprise! It's a hoax.

OK. You're an editor. Ask yourself this -- a flaming person, many times larger than a mouse, will thrash about but generally isn't going very far. So a flaming mouse is going to be able to scamper out of a burning pile of leaves and back to a house, a distance relative to its size that would be like a flaming person going a hundred feet or more?

One of Fisher's big six questions for editors: Does this make sense?

Update

Per Howard's note below, here is the AP story (Via CNN) that calls into question the calling into question.
And here's the follow-up from the Clovis News Journal.
You make the call. This one is best left to scamper away, I think.

AP carried a story this morning that would draw the reader to the conclusion that it wasn't a hoax -- directly confronting reports that it was a hoax. I can easily believe it really happened.

the fire would be smothered. the mouse would go into a small space, to feel safer, and the fire along with the mouse's life, would be smothered.
