ACES conference fellowships

Entry-level copy editors at small publications have until Jan. 29, 2007, to apply for fellowships to the American Copy Editors Society's annual national conference, to be held April 19-21 at Miami's Marriott Biscayne Bay.

In exchange for working a total of eight hours during the conference, fellows can attend conference sessions during their off hours.

Fellows' work may involve working shifts at the registration desk or merchandise table and producing content for conference Web and newsletter coverage.

ACES members with two years of experience or less who work for publications with circulations of 50,000 or less and who never have attended a national ACES conference are eligible to apply. Each editor is eligible for a fellowship only once. FOR THE MIAMI CONFERENCE, EDITORS FROM SOUTHEASTERN STATES WILL BE GIVEN PREFERENCE.

Fellowships cover conference registration and tickets to the Thursday night opening social and Friday night banquet. Fellows are responsible for other meals, hotel costs, transportation and tickets to the Saturday night party. Roommate-finding assistance may be available.

To apply, e-mail frilouxz@rockymountainnews.com and include:

  • Your name, address and telephone number
  • The publication for which you work
  • A brief outline of your work experience and educational background
  • Your experience with ACES, including during college
Editors will be notified of their acceptance by e-mail or telephone and will have three days to accept a fellowship. Decisions will be made on a rolling basis, and available spots may be filled prior to Jan. 29.
