More on Whois - ASNE

I've written in this space about the attempts to put "whois" information -- one of the most valuable tools in tracking down Web site owners -- off-limits to the public (and journalists).

The American Society of Newspaper Editors now has decided to weigh in on the issue with the governing agency, ICANN. Read all about it in November's Common Sense Journalism column and about how the issue has flown under the radar of most journalism organizations.

Let's hope it's not too little too late. ICANN closed the comment period in July. Maybe if enough journalists shine a light on what's happening, ICANN will take notice.
